Abel Tasman 3 Day Guided Trek
Day 1
After picking you up at your accommodation in Nelson, Motueka or Marahau, we get to know each other a little and begin our Abel Tasman Coastal Track walk. A water taxi shuttle to Anchorage/Torrent Bay and meander back the 12.4 kms at our own pace through regenerating native forest, beside beautiful golden sand beaches while looking out on the Astralobe Roadstead – the waterway with Adele and Fishermans Islands forming the other side. Usually we linger at one or more of the beaches – Apple Tree Bay being a favourite, before passing by a series of bays to the track start at Marahau and to Abel Tasman Lodge, our great accommodation for the night.
Abel Tasman Lodge is the perfect base in Marahau – centrally located, in a park like setting with wonderful stylish rooms! After settling in, we wander down to the waterfront and enjoy the dining at the renowned Hooked restaurant.
Day 2
Today is the big day discovering the heart of the park and begins back on the back on the golden sands of Anchorage Beach after our watertaxi shuttle from Marahau. From there we now head north and cross the Torrent Bay inlet to the baches (holiday homes) there. Then it’s into the regenerating forest with remnant large beech and rimu trees in the gullies as we make our way to Medlands Bay and Bark Bay. From here you ascend again to the highest point on the whole track (approx 135m) before arriving at the historic abandoned Tonga granite quarry. Sitting on the beach there Tonga Island floats directly in front of us and sea is perfect for a swim. You meander along the cresent shaped Onatahuti beach next, lazily soaking up the golden beauty of this spot – a tidal estuary crossing meets us at the end of the beach. The last leg is through a manuka and tree fern forest until we find Awaroa Lodge our accommodation for the night.
The wonderful Awaroa Lodge is nestled into the manuka forest at the east end of the most perfect beach – Awaroa Beach. It is both elegant and funky at the same time, minutes from the beach and this is reflected in the beachy casualness air of Awaroa Lodge. We stay in well appointed hotel rooms with ensuites and dine in their wonderful restaurant
Day 3
Wonderful Awaroa Lodge is nestled into the manuka forest at the east end of the most perfect beach – Awaroa Beach. It is both elegant and funky at the same time, minutes from the beach and this is reflected in the beachy casualness air of Awaroa Lodge. We stay in well appointed hotel rooms with ensuites and dine in their wonderful restaurant. It is with reluctance that we leave the style, casual elegance and beauty of Awaroa and make our way across the huge Awaroa Inlet to Pound Gully – this is a tidal crossing so tides dictate our timing. From here the track weaves it way through some amazing virgin New Zealand forest with huge podocarp trees reaching skyward, before bursting out on yet another golden sand beach – Waiharakeke Bay. Up and over another headland with huge native Rata trees clinging to the granite cliffs. It’s here you will see our destination, the golden beach of Totaranui stretching out in the distance. Soon you come across a campground as you make your way to the pick up point for your water taxi journey back to Marahau. All the landscape you have spent the last three days walking through you now gain a new perspective on as we see it from the sea.
Once Back in Marahau we shuttle you back to your accommodation and bid farewell.
